Acupressure

What is acupressure?

Acupressure is an alternative healing treatment similar in principle to acupuncture, in that it focuses on the manipulation of acupoints along meridians to release the flow of Qi (pronounced chee).

Life energy—Qi–flows through meridians throughout the body. In treatment, physical pressure insteaed of needles is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians. Pressure may be applied by hand, by elbow, or with various devices. Acupressure releases tension, increases circulation and boosts the immune system.

How does acupressure work?

Acupressure uses either light or firm pressure on the same points as acupuncture needles, usually from finger pressure given by the acupuncturist. As the pressure cannot be maintained for the same length of time as a needle, nor on as many points at the same time, often acupressure involves moving from point to point on the body in sequence. With light finger pressure, acupressure seeks to address more energetic aspects of a person’s condition and is quite gentle.

As a point is pressed, the muscle tension yields to the finger pressure, enabling the fibers to elongate and relax, blood to flow freely, and toxins to be released and eliminated. Increased circulation also brings more oxygen and other nutrients to affected areas. This increases the body’s resistance to illness and promotes a longer, healthier, more vital life. When the blood and bioelectrical energy circulate properly, we have a greater sense of harmony. health, and well-being.

How is acupressure different from acupuncture?

Both treatments involve the manipulation of acupoints along meridians. Acupressure applies physical pressure to these points, acupuncture applies needles to these points. For physical pain acupuncture is typically recommend, as the needles allow the pressure points to be steadily afficted, for a longer period of time, thus allowing natural healing to occur. However, for conditions where relaxation and gentle energetic healing are beneficial, acupressure can definitely help.

Acupressure vs Acupuncture?

With any treatment, it is always advisable to start with the minimum treatment, to see if that works. Since acupressure relies on the same method of treatment as acupuncture—releasing blocked Qi by stimulating acupoints—acupressure is a good starting point, before moving on to needles. Sometimes acupressure is just enough stimulation to cure the problem. For those patients who are open to Eastern Medicine practices but are afraid of needles, acupressure is a good option. Acupressure applies a less dgreee of manipulation of the acupoint for a shorter duration as compared to the stimulation provided by acupuncture needles. However, the minimal manipulation provided by acupressure is sometimes enough to provide relief. Lastly, acupressure is an ideal treatment option, because it can be perform on one’s own, as a supplement to your regular treatment.
